Our adjuvant or supportive therapies have been proven to assist our patients to achieve a greater sense of well-being and overall health.
Nutritional Oncology
utilizes the aspects of good nutrition to augment and support a patient’s cancer treatments. Simply stated, it is critical to establish a balanced nutritional plan to support healthy tissues while we treat the cancer. We address the strengths and weaknesses of the disease in the development of the treatment plan. Adjustments are made throughout treatment as changes occur on the bio-chemical/molecular level.
Acupuncture and Massage Therapy
have proven to help treat successfully the side effects – such as fatigue, nausea, and painful neuropathy – associated with undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
The acupuncturist is able to influence health by stimulating certain areas known as meridians. The meridian points, or acupoints, are stimulated by fine slender needles to adjust the vital energy so the proper amount reaches the proper place at the proper time. Correcting energy imbalances helps your body heal itself by enhancing the beneficial changes in the body's own natural painkillers, anti-inflammatory agents, immune system functions, and hormonal activity.
Bone Densitometry
is an accurate, painless, and safe way to measure bone mineral density – plainly stated, the strength of one’s bones. Statistically, a large number of American women over the age of 40 (half the women past menopause are at high risk) develop a potentially painful and crippling disease – osteoporosis. Today, 2 million men have osteoporosis and it is thought that another 12 million are at risk. In a recent study of men aged 21 to 77, 65% of those with upper back pain have osteoporosis. It occurs when bone loss is so severe it causes bones to become brittle and likely to break. Chemotherapy treatments can further contribute to bone density damage. To accurately measure the condition of the patient, we offer an advanced technology called DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry). The procedure is painless, fast, and non-invasive. If bone deterioration is found, we can work with the patient nutritionally and medically to determine a treatment plan.
Lymphatic Massage Therapy
Lymphedema is the abnormal swelling of the arms, legs, breast, abdomen, neck, or head due to a damaged lymphatic system. While Lymphedema may be congenital, it is also associated with lymphatic damage among post-mastectomy and other post surgery patients who have had lymph nodes removed or radiation treatments.
MLD, manual lymphatic drainage, combats the unwanted swelling associated with lymphedema with a very specialized light touch massage. The massage technique accelerates the flow of lymph and prevents damage to the tissues while re-directing the flow of the lymph. The practitioner re-directs the flow manually by directing the fluids to collateral lymph vessels that carry the lymph to normal functioning lymphatic vessels and nodes.
